Anonymous Has Declared War on ISIS

In the wake of terrorist attacks in Paris and renewed airstrikes in Syria, hacking collective Anonymous has declared war on ISIS.

In a video published on YouTube, a masked Anonymous spokesperson explains in French that ISIS can“expect massive cyber attacks. War is declared. Get prepared. Anonymous from all over the world will hunt you down.”

A series of tweets reinforce the sentiment, explaining that the collective is “preparing to unleash waves of attacks on ISIS” following the Paris attacks. They point out that they haven’t “only just declared war on #IslamicState,” but instead “have been at war for quite some time already.” They also add that they have “better hackers” than Islamic State. Sassy.

Exactly what form the Anonymous attacks will take remains to be seen. Yesterday the collective claimed that it had taken down over 3,800 pro-ISIS Twitter accounts, but such hacks can only go so far. Indeed, as a collective—and not a unified front—it may have its work cut out. But if it can pull together to disrupt cash flows and communications within ISIS, it may be able to produce more impact than many may expect.

We’ll have to wait and see.
